Out of all the business and marketing books I've read over the past few years, these are the best--the cream of the crop!

Getting Real A very inspiring e-book by the creators of the company 37Signals, who also created the increasingly popular web application framework Ruby on Rails. But this book is useful not only to people programming web sites. Their principles about staying lean, keeping things simple, and staying tuned in to your audience, are applicable to any entrepreneurial project.

Marketing Plan Workbook By high-integrity marketing "guru" Robert Middleton, this is a free, downloadable PDF file that you can use as a basic roadmap to promote a professional service business.

Web Site Tool Kit Another product by Robert Middleton, provides a simple, doable framework for creating a web site to promote your professional service business.

InfoGuru Marketing Manual If you like the Marketing Plan Workbook, this is a whole lot more information, and every chapter eminently useful. Highly recommended!

Love is the Killer App A book about generosity, and giving away information and care as a way to get ahead.

Purple Cow All Seth Godin's books are brilliant. This little volume is one of my favorite. Expresses the idea that to really get noticed, you might want to create a "purple cow"--something unique and novel, to get people's attention. But that doesn't do it justice. A great book!

All Marketers Are Liars Another wonderful book by Seth Godin, the facetiously-titled book is actually about how what all people really remember and think about are stories--and that we live, breathe, and want stories. It really gets you thinking about what story telling, and what story you want to tell.

Secrets of Persuasive Testimonials A quite useful, informative e-book about how to get and use testimonials effectively. Quite worth the price.

Secrets of Word of Mouth Marketing A brilliant book about marketing from an experienced old hand. There's so much in here that applies not just to word-of-mouth, but an expanded view of the entire marketing process.

Creating Customer Evangelists A brilliant book about doing things so well that your customers market for you. Haven't you ever noticed that when you feel really good about a company, you want to tell people about them? This is about that.

The War of Art This is a truly powerful and amazing book about doing what we really want to do, the power of our own resistance to stop us, and the way towards overcoming it.

Presence: An Exploration of Profound Change in People, Organizations, and Society A truly beautiful and amazing book about how real change happens--at all levels. I found I really have to settle into the book to understand it. Not that it's poorly written--it's just that it speaks to a deep level. It goes down to the intuitive within us. And at the same time, it is eminently practical. One of the most influential books I have ever read.

The One Page Business Plan: Start With a Vision, Build a Company! A handy little manual that becomes a simple, effective business plan. In keeping with my philosophy of keeping it simple and taking action. I like the idea of this "book" a lot. There should be more like it.

The 80/20 Principle: The Secret of Achieving More with Less A brilliant exploration of the principle that 80% of returns (in business, and in life generally) tend to result from 20% of the efforts. Oh, and 20% of the returns tend to result from 80% of the efforts. This book can really change your viewpoint about what's really important, and how to use your time and your resources, in your business and in your life.

The Soul of Money A beautiful and deep book about the real value of money, by a leading fund raiser for The Hunger Project, a truly inspiring organization.

Attracting Perfect Customers A rather mystically-oriented--and very helpful--book about marketing your business.

The Bootstrapper's Bible, by Seth Godin. A wonderful, and free, e-book about starting a small business. Lots of inspiration, and lots of practical advice.
